6-Hour Offshore Myrtle Beach Fishing Charter

Ready to venture beyond the shoreline and chase some serious fish in the deep blue Atlantic? This 6-hour offshore charter puts you in prime position to battle trophy-sized game fish that cruise the waters 15-30 miles off the Myrtle Beach coast. Captain and crew aboard the Salty Dog know exactly where the fish are biting, and with an extended trip window, you'll have plenty of time to work multiple spots and find the action. Perfect for groups of up to 4 anglers who want the full offshore experience without breaking the bank, this charter delivers everything you need for an authentic day of deep-sea fishing along South Carolina's legendary coast.

What to Expect on the Water

Your adventure kicks off bright and early at the marina, where you'll meet your captain and get the lowdown on the day's game plan. The ride out to the fishing grounds takes about 45 minutes to an hour, giving you time to watch the coastline fade away and spot dolphins riding the boat's wake. Once we hit the productive waters, it's game on. You'll be trolling ballyhoo and cigar minnows behind the boat, watching the outriggers and waiting for that telltale scream of the reel when a big fish crashes the spread. Between trolling runs, we'll anchor up on structure and drop live bait for snappers and grouper, or switch to wire leaders when the sharks show up. The Salty Dog's air-conditioned cabin is a real game-changer on hot summer days, and there's plenty of room to spread out between fights. With 6 hours on the water, you're not rushed – there's time to try different techniques, move spots if the bite slows down, and really dial in on what's working best that day.

Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup

Offshore fishing is all about covering water and presenting baits where the fish are feeding. We run a spread of four to six lines, using different lures and baits at varying distances behind the boat. The outriggers keep your lines spread wide, preventing tangles and covering more water as we cruise at 6-8 knots. Circle hooks are standard for live bait fishing – they hook fish in the corner of the mouth and reduce deep hooking, making releases much more successful. When we're bottom fishing, we'll use knocker rigs or chicken rigs with 8-12 ounce sinkers to get baits down in the current. The crew handles all the rigging and re-baiting, so you can focus on fighting fish instead of tying knots. Rod selection depends on what we're targeting – lighter tackle for Spanish mackerel and smaller snappers, stepping up to 30-50 pound class gear when kings and wahoo are in the mix. Wire leaders are essential when sharks are around, and we always have a variety of weights and rigs ready to adapt to changing conditions throughout the day.

Species You'll Want to Hook

King Mackerel are the crown jewel of Myrtle Beach offshore fishing, and these silver bullets can absolutely torch a reel when they hit. Running anywhere from 15 to 40 pounds, with occasional fish pushing 50-plus, kings are aggressive predators that love trolled baits and live offerings. Spring through fall is prime time, with the biggest fish typically showing up in late summer and early fall when they're feeding heavily before their southern migration. What makes kings so special is their initial run – they'll peel off 100-200 yards of line in seconds, testing your drag and your nerves. The fight combines blistering speed with acrobatic jumps, and landing a 30-pound king is something you'll remember for years.

Red Snapper represent the holy grail of bottom fishing in these waters, though regulations can be tricky with limited seasons. These ruby-red beauties inhabit hard bottom structure and artificial reefs 60-120 feet down, and they're absolute bulldogs on the rod. A quality snapper will run 5-15 pounds, with trophy fish exceeding 20. They're notoriously finicky eaters, often requiring light leaders and small hooks to fool, but once hooked, they dive straight for the bottom with surprising power. The meat quality is outstanding – firm, white fillets that are perfect for grilling or frying. When snapper season is open, even a few hours can yield enough fillets for several family dinners.

Wahoo are the speed demons of the offshore world, capable of hitting 50+ mph when they attack trolled baits. These torpedo-shaped predators prefer the cleaner blue water further offshore and are most common during cooler months when baitfish migrations bring them closer to our coast. A typical wahoo runs 20-40 pounds, but 60-pounders are caught regularly by offshore boats. Their razor-sharp teeth can slice through wire leaders, and their initial run is even faster than a king mackerel's. The dark, rich meat is excellent eating with a texture similar to king mackerel but with more flavor.

Sharks add an element of raw power that's hard to match with any other species. Blacktip, sandbar, and bull sharks are common in our offshore waters, ranging from 50 to 200-plus pounds. They're opportunistic feeders that will hit trolled baits or fresh-cut bottom baits, and the fight is all about endurance. A big shark will make multiple runs, testing your tackle and your arms as you pump and wind for 20-30 minutes. Most sharks are released after a quick photo, but the experience of battling a 100-pound predator is something that stays with you. Peak shark action typically occurs during warmer months when they move inshore to feed and reproduce.
